Are there any agreements that the Sponsor must enter into?

Yes, as the Sponsor it is required of you to enter into a Sponsorship Agreement with the person whom you are wishing to Sponsor.

What does this agreement mean for you?

When you sign this agreement it means that you are agreeing to provide all of the “essential needs” of the person who is being sponsored. For the person being sponsored this agreement means that they are going to make every effort and take all the appropriate steps that they can to become self-supporting once they come into Canada.

What is meant by “essential needs”?

This means that you will agree to basically provide all of the necessities for them to live. This will include but absolutely not limited to:

  • Shelter (home, apartment, etc.)
  • Food
  • Water
  • Clothing
  • Health and Dental care that aren’t covered
  • Along with any other necessary goods and/or services

As a Sponsor this agreement will also mean that your own financial obligations will not stand in the way of you providing for the person you are Sponsoring. Also included within this section is that if you plan on Sponsoring a Foreign National, they will not have to apply for social assistance, you will be able to provide them with everything that they need.

What does this agreement mean?

The Sponsorship Agreement means that you and the person who you are wishing to Sponsor are bound by your obligations once you have signed.

Can you back out of the agreement?

No, once you have signed you cannot withdraw on your agreement unless your entire undertaking happens to be withdrawn before your visa issuance if the person you are sponsoring is outside of Canada or before Permanent Resident Status is granted if the person you are sponsoring is within Canada.

Who is required to sign the agreement?

It is required that both you as the Sponsor and the person you are wanting to Sponsor sign this agreement. This will ensure that both of the parties involved are on the same page and have come upon an agreement of the obligations that they hold to themselves and each other throughout this process.

If there are any co-signers involved in the Sponsoring with you then they will need to sign the agreement as well.
