After completing your application, through the spousal sponsorship class, and mailing it out, you may be required to
attend an interview after your application has been reviewed. You might be wondering why you were chosen for an interview and not others, or you might wish to know how you should prepare yourself.

During an interview, you should expect to explain questions regarding,

  • Your relationship
  • Your education
  • Your reason for wanting to come to Canada
  • What plans you have and how you have prepared yourself for a life in Canada
  • Your family
  • Your health
  • Your financial state
  • Any past problems with the law

I will explain some of the reasons why you might be asked certain questions so that you will understand what it is a visa officer will be looking for. It is important to note that, this is not an exhaustive explanation, and the best method is to just answer truthfully.

In terms of your relationship, a visa officer may wish to understand more in order to gage whether or not the relationship is genuine. This might include further questions about how you met, when your relationship became serious, essentially, the nature of your relationship and how it came to be.

If you are asked questions regarding your plans and preparation for your move to Canada, it could mean that a visa officer wishes to know that you have intentions to permanently stay and contribute to Canada; that you have no intention to move back to your home country after having gained citizenship and the benefits that come with it. This could also show that you have plans to support yourself and will not become a burden to Canada.

Your health and criminal history are asked because they are reasons for inadmissibility. This means that if they have reason(s) to believe that your health is not up to par or you have past criminal convictions, then you may be denied access to Canada.

There are no certainties when it comes to knowing what a visa officer will ask you. The only thing you can do is to send in an application that is complete and accurate and be as well informed as possible.
